Outlook 2010 not responding on open

Many things can cause Outlook to go into a “Not responding” state when it first opens and so identifying the right fix can be tricky. So we started with the usual: Office repair, created a new Outlook profile, turned off add-ons, opened in safe mode, tried a different mailbox, disabled anti-virus, logged in as a domain admin user, checked recent updates – but still Outlook would crash as soon as it opened. After 1 ½ hours we found the fix! We simply installed the following Outlook 2010 update (32-bit edition) KB2553248 - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=29361
 
This installed very quickly and did not even require a reboot. Outlook now opens perfectly! After spending so long on a problem that is usually so quick to fix, it seemed right to share the solution with the rest of the world so that hopefully no one else will waste 1 ½ hours looking for such a simple answer!
